Through generous support from Tulane University’s Institute for Gulf South Studies, and with the guidance of filmmaker and Tulane staff Luisa Dantas (Land of Opportunity), we’ve been at Clark Prep High School in the Tremé for the 2012-2013 school year, creating a vibrant after-school video production program. Juniors and Seniors in Tulane’s Digital Media program who take Dantas’ Place-based Storytelling class come to Clark Prep High School after the school day and work with our students conceiving, scripting, shooting and editing productions that reflect Clark students’ experiences of the place they call home. Together this year they’ve created 5 short video pieces, one of which, a mini-documentary about the I-10 Claiborne corridor, called Splitting the Treme, was just named the first place winner in the Congress for the New Urbanism’s “Highways to Boulevards” video contest! Clark Prep, Tulane and NOVAC will be hosting the Place-Based Storytelling program again next year, so stay tuned for more great videos created by local kids!

Her experience consists of working for major studios including Summit Entertainment, Fox Television Studios, Inferno Entertainment, Disney ABC Networks, Warner Brothers, and Walt Disney Studios.
NOVAC has been serving filmmakers for over 40 years, but we couldn’t do it without the help of our interns. These superstars commit to a minimum 5 hours per week (most work 10) and are typically enrolled in a college or university (though not necessarily). Interns usually fall into one of three intern categories: Marketing/Promo, Membership/Events, and Equipment/Video. All interns, however, are responsible for certain duties across the board. Check out more about the internship positions and their responsibilities to see if applying for a NOVAC internship is right for you. It’s a commitment.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Darcy McKinnon’s first job in New Orleans was as a videographer for NOVAC. After a BA in Film Studies from the University of Florida and an MA in Comparative Literature & Film Studies at Indiana University, Darcy lived for six years in San Francisco working on independent features and documentaries. While producing commercial pieces at Mineral Films, Darcy mainly worked closely with director Vicky Funari to edit and co-produce Live, Nude Girls UNITE!, a documentary feature about the first sex worker’s union in the U.S., and later in the innovative Maquilapolis – City of Factories. Maquilapolis tells the stories of women working in assembly factories along the U.S. – Mexico border, and was created in collaboration with the women featured in the film, as they shot many of the scenes in the documentary, and took the film on tour. The inclusive process of making this six-year project focused Darcy on the importance of community media in the development of local culture. Darcy moved to New Orleans in 2001, and worked on a NOVAC youth media project at New Orleans Charter Middle School, the first charter school in New Orleans. An active NOVAC board member since 2004, Darcy became Executive Director of NOVAC in March 2012. Her development background includes film funding including up $300K for one documentary project, educational and non-profit sector development and campaign design.
