he film industry in New Orleans, and in Louisiana in general, is booming. But it is not only the major studio productions coming to the Crescent City. Independent filmmaking has also exploded in the area. Organizations like New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC) help promote, encourage, and expand film knowledge and practice throughout the city, which only benefits the region’s rapidly growing industry. It’s been a long time coming that New Orleans is finally able to embrace an industry that is not completely indigenous to the region. I’ll go out on a limb here and say that most folks in this area are predestined to do certain things and hold certain occupations. Without going into the whole social strata debate, let’s just say, folks around here need some new opportunities.
Just like the most recent influx of new media, tech, and other industry related jobs, New Orleans has become the South’s Mecca for cinema and production. Hollywood South is the real deal and it continues to grow at an alarming rate. Just since Katrina, there have been some truly massive productions established over months and months, and have provided both great temporary and sustainable permanent income for hundreds, if not thousands of New Orleanians.  Read the rest of this entry.

The New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC) is holding two events in April designed to promote the growth of the local independent film scene.  Hosted by Dillard University School of Mass Communication’s film program, Producing the Indie - two day seminar (April 13 – 14, 9am – 5pm) will give independent filmmakers the tools to produce their first feature.  It will be followed ny Get Funded! (April 14 at 7pm), an evening panel discussion designed to demystify the world of film financing for the feature producer.
