Pre-Viz Pop-Up

When “time is money” making your directorial decisions ahead of time is key, particularly as an indie filmmaker. Whether you are shooting your next picture with a Red Epic Camera, 35mm or an iPhone, every decision you make ahead of time will save you time AND money, and when you are going indie, time is something money can’t buy.

At the Pre-Viz Pop-Up you’ll learn the key pre-visualization techniques used by the leading directors and art departments of major motion pictures. More than just a lecture, this is a hands-on class that will give you the skills you need to nail down the visual elements of your story.

Taught by accomplished set designer and pre-visualization artist, Randall Wilkins (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Straw Dogs, Super 8, Tron, Social Network, Benjamin Button) Pre-Viz Pop-Up will cover topics like:

  • How the human vision works and the traditional techniques used to trick the audience
  • Understanding lenses and how to quickly determine the equivalent lens in any format
  • The “psychology” of lens and framing selection and why wide lenses have “energy”
  • Pre-Viz, D-Viz and Post-Viz: the differences between them and how putting off decisions can cost you big time
  • Understanding architectural drawings of sets and locations and how to use them to effectively plan your shots
  • Working with an Art Director and Production Designer
  • The value of visual reference boards and ways to use them
  • Scouting locations and what information you need to get from them
  • Using Google Earth as your location scout
  • Using Storyboards effectively and why your DP may hate them
  • Creating accurate storyboards without drawing
  • The basics of 3D and why shooting it incorrectly can give your audience a headache.

You will also be able to study photographs, models and drawings from feature films such as The Social Network, Tron and others to examine the filmmaker’s process in deciding how a location was shot.
