Please join us on Wednesday, April 24th from 6-9 PM at NOVAC: New Orleans for our “Beyond the Screen: Activating Your Film in Non-Traditional Film Spaces” workshop with our own Kelsey Scult (@madame_kelso)!
 This course will explore how to activate your film through installations in non-traditional film spaces. From art galleries and museums to cargo ship containers and abandoned motels — some films need to exist beyond the screen in order to be fully experienced.

* The film history of artists and filmmakers that have activated their films through installation
* Local, national, and international funding and residency opportunities for this kind of work
* Workshopping specific ways course participants can activate their own films

Instructor Bio:
Kelsey Scult is a New Orleans-based filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist. Films Kelsey has produced have played at Sundance, SXSW, Frameline, Outfest, and more. She produced the ‘21 Sundance Award-winning feature film “Ma Belle, My Beauty” directed by Marion Hill which was acquired for domestic and international distribution. She is an alumna of the New Orleans Film Society’s Southern Producers Lab, The Gotham’s Narrative Lab, and the Southern Foodways Alliance Filmmaker Residency. She has exhibited her installation work across the country and abroad, including locally at The Front, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Antenna, Tulane’s Carroll Gallery, and The Parlour Gallery. She is the Co-President of The Front Gallery in New Orleans, and Manager of Creative Services at NOVAC.

Film festivals are fun and rewarding and can significantly advance your career. They are also expensive, stressful, and can sometimes feel like a wasted opportunity. Strategizing your festival run is a key part of the distribution phase that you should be considering before your movie goes into post production. This class will give you some tips on making the most out of your festival run.

The workshop will cover:
Developing festival strategy during film development
Understanding festivals
FilmFreeway prep and navigation
Understanding your demographic
What to do once you’re accepted

Instructor bio:
Gian Francisco Smith is a New Orleans based, multi-disciplinary artist and community organizer. Smith’s film franchise “The Adulterer” has screened in almost 20 film festivals around the country winning a Remi award at Worldfest Houston 49th annual festival and “Best Narrative Short” at the Festival of Cinema NYC 2018. The Gene Siskel Institute in Chicago, by way of the Black Harvest festival, sponsored Smith’s next work through a generous grant, and ultimately a nomination for the Ellen Sandor award, the festival’s top prize, for his original short “love tap.” Gian’s 2021 film “Tucker’s War” closed out its festival run picking up a third award for best feature at the Hip Hop film festival in Harlem. 2021 also saw Smith receive a fellowship with the New Orleans Film Society’s Emerging Voices Program.
Currently Smith is serving as festival director for the annual Black Film Festival of New Orleans which he founded in 2018, and as Creative Services coordinator at NOVAC while he works to complete his short-to-feature film “The Capitalist” which has already received the Founder’s Circle Award and a $3,000 grant at LA Film Prize 2023.

We’ve teamed up with The COOL Cooperative this summer to offer middle and high school the most intensive (and of course free) filmmaking camp to date!

It’s a crash course in creativity, collaboration, and the sheer joy of making movies. Hosted at Second Line Stages, students will spend 4-weeks learning what it takes to make a film in the department of their choosing.

Naomi Scherelle is a living witness. She is a spirited healer, writer, educator, and alchemist cultivating soft places for Black folks to land. Naomi aids folks in the practice of returning to the body and developing a personal relationship with the divine. Naomi is the author of The Clearing and the creator of 4ColouredGurlz, a wellness business that is an ode to Black folks and a declaration that comfort and joy is a colored girl's birthright.

Well rounded in many genres of music Dj2ready takes you on a musical journey of your favorite classics and your new favorite jams.

Zariane Nuñez is professional makeup and special effects artist based in New Orleans with 10 years experience specializing in bruising, scrapes, wounds, bullet holes and scarring. During her career, she's been the lead makeup artist for short films, live productions, commercials and music video productions.
