The Born Digital Youth Media Program at NOVAC develops young future creatives, ages 8 to 24, from diverse background in South Louisiana who can use digital media training opportunities to develop high wage and low barrier entry to careers. We do this through the following programs:

About

NOVAC’s CTE SCA Courses

Designed by professionals working in the industry, our curriculum focuses on providing soft and software skills through engaging and relevant coursework. Our courses not only prepare students to earn a basic statewide credential in an Adobe software program, but also use project-based learning to foster problem-solving, collaborative working, original thinking, cultural awareness, and project management skills.

Students from all learning backgrounds will be able to create their own content with their own voice after learning with NOVAC. Students will also have the opportunity to access high-wage digital media positions and be equipped with a comprehensive set of 21st century workplace skills. NOVAC students will be part of the next generation of storytellers, designers, makers, technologists, and artists.

Video Design Course Offerings

In a world increasingly dominated by digital media, the people who benefit from wages in the industry are those who are trained with tools to create content. Jobs in digital media are based on relationship, portfolio, and technical skill. NOVAC specializes in tailoring digital media curriculum to meet the needs of students, giving partner schools access to creative digital media software, technology, and knowledge.

NOVAC’s Video Design Courses (below) are for students with an expressed interest in exploring the field of design, visual storytelling, still photography, motion, animation, cinematography, audio arts and post-production.

Educator Training

Let NOVAC train your teachers!

One of the core goals of the Born Digital Youth Media Program is to aid in the cultivation of creative career pathways for Louisiana youth by equipping educators to prepare students for Adobe Creative Professional (ACP) credentialing.

We provide New Orleans teachers with support networks and tangible resources to foster digital literacy in their classrooms. We are currently offering Photoshop for Instructors, Premiere Pro for Instructors, and ensure educators have free opportunities to take the Adobe Creative Professional exam.

Duration and costs vary. Please contact jay@novacvideo.org with questions.

Youth Workshops

NOVAC offers film and design workshops for youth of all ages.  We also work with partner organizations to develop and deliver custom youth workshops to introduce youth of all ages to digital media and visual storytelling.

PAST WORKSHOPS INCLUDE:

  • 2-week summer film intensive in partnership with the New Orleans Museum of Art and filmmaker Garret Bradley where each youth created an experimental short film on the topic This is My America that was screened at NOMA with the Bodies of Knowledge exhibition. You can view the final films by clicking here.

  • Creative Freelance mini-series with students from the Futures Fund. In this mini series students explored what it takes to work as a creative freelancer by creating a short testimonial video for a mock client, the Futures Fund! Check out the final video here.

  • Vision-maker Summer Storytelling Camp with youth from the United Houma Nation interested in creative digital media as a means to tell the stories of indigenous perspectives in Southeast Louisiana. In this camp, youth created three short films: White Alligator, The River’s Changing Course, and Adapt. Watch all three films here!
