New Orleans Video Access Center, is the Gulf South’s longest operating media arts nonprofit.  We believe storytellers empower communities, so we empower storytellers. NOVAC’s work consists of three pillars: youth media education, Film/Tv industry workforce development and independent filmmaker services. NOVAC work is Louisiana-based with offices in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Position Summary:

The Youth Instructor will lead the Environmental Justice Youth Documentary Project, guiding high school students in New Orleans East as they document the impact of abandoned sites posing health risks in their community. This part-time position involves instruction and mentorship throughout the filmmaking process, including pre-production, production, and post-production. The instructor will help participants develop technical skills, foster creativity, and cultivate teamwork to produce a meaningful short documentary film.

Key Responsibilities:

Instruction and Facilitation

● Facilitate an introductory session to outline the project scope, environmental justice themes, and the filmmaking process

● Provide guidance and mentorship during pre-production, including storyboarding, planning, and developing technical skills for interviewing and shooting.

● Supervise and mentor students during production, supporting them in capturing high-quality footage and conducting interviews with community leaders.

● Lead students through post-production, offering hands-on instruction to assemble and edit their footage into a cohesive rough cut of their documentary.

● Foster creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking among students as they work in teams.

Program Support

● Collaborate with program staff to ensure the successful implementation of the project’s objectives and timeline.

● Maintain an inclusive and supportive environment, ensuring all students feel empowered to participate and express themselves.

Qualification Experience:

● Demonstrated experience in video production and post-production, including camera operation, lighting, sound recording, and editing (Adobe Premiere Pro preferred).

● Experience working with youth, particularly high school students, in creative or technical field

● Familiarity with environmental justice issues and community storytelling.

Skills

● Strong organizational and time-management skills.

● Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to engage and inspire youth

● Ability to create an inclusive, supportive, and team-oriented classroom environment.

● Knowledge of production workflows and media management practice

Preferred

● Bachelor’s degree in media arts, filmmaking, education, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.

● Teaching or mentorship experience in creative field

Other Requirements

● Ability to reliably travel to and from New Orleans East and transport production equipment as needed. Program-related trips are eligible for mileage reimbursement.
